UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja continues to pursue a dream showdown with the legendary Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, despite Johnson’s retirement from professional competition. Pantoja, who has established himself as one of the most dominant champions in mixed martial arts, sees a potential super fight with the flyweight GOAT as the ultimate test of his abilities.
Pantoja first issued his challenge to Johnson following his impressive victory over Kai Asakura at UFC 310. While Johnson quickly dismissed the idea, citing his retirement, Pantoja has not given up hope. Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, the Brazilian champion shared his admiration for Johnson and explained why this fight is so significant to him.
“I understand if he doesn’t want to (fight), I have huge respect (for him),” Pantoja said. “But I’ve seen him training right now, and I don’t know, maybe that (fight) happens. I just need to train with him. Maybe training with him, that’s something I want because I’m training with (Henry) Cejudo, I train with Kyoji Horiguchi and Adriano Moraes. I fight with a lot of good fighters.
“That’s something I have dreamed about, fight with the best fighters in the world. Demetrious Johnson is the best one… He’s so smart, and I want to challenge him for that. That’s why I’m fighting, and that’s why I never say no to anybody. Maybe I can text him and we can train together.”
Pantoja’s journey to becoming champion has been nothing short of remarkable. After capturing the flyweight belt in a thrilling contest, he has continued to impress with dominant performances and successful title defenses. Yet, a clash with Johnson represents more than just another fight — it’s a chance to solidify his legacy against the greatest flyweight in MMA history.
