Alexander Volkanovski is focused on regaining the UFC featherweight title after his unexpected knockout loss to Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 in February, which ended his four-year reign. Despite losing three of his last four fights, including two unsuccessful attempts at the lightweight title against Islam Makhachev, Volkanovski’s priority is to reclaim his featherweight crown.
Volkanovski told Sky Sports New Zealand he’s waiting for the winner of the upcoming title fight between Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway at UFC 308 on October 26.
“That’s exactly what’s happening,” Volkanovski confirmed.
Although he considered a lightweight bout, he believes staying in his weight class is the smartest move.
“The UFC aren’t big fans of floating,” he explained. “I might just have to wait. It’s only a couple of months, I’m sure I’ll be fine.”
As Volkanovski ponders his potential opponents, he admits he'd prefer a rematch with Topuria to avenge his recent loss. However, he acknowledges Holloway's skill, predicting that “Max is just going to be a little bit too much for Ilia.” Regardless of who emerges victorious, Volkanovski is determined to fight for the featherweight title once again. For now, Volkanovski is willing to wait, emphasizing that only a title fight is worth his effort.
“I can’t be active and fight anybody,” he stated. “I love to be active, but at the same time I need the right fights.”
His path back to the top is clear: face the best and prove why he deserves to reign as the featherweight champion once more.
