Alexander Volkanovski, the UFC featherweight champion, is resolute in his determination to return to the octagon in January for a title fight against Ilia Topuria. Despite a recent setback in a rematch against Islam Makhachev at UFC 294, Volkanovski remains undeterred in his quest to compete in the first UFC pay-per-view event of 2024.
Volkanovski had been rumored for a title defense against Topuria in January before accepting the short-notice fight against Makhachev. Even after suffering his first UFC career knockout, Volkanovski's focus is unwavering.
"I talked to the UFC and I said keep me busy because, again, I'm in my prime, I need to fight," Volkanovski conveyed on his YouTube channel. "A lot of people are like, 'He needs a break and this.' I don't need a break. I want to get back in camp."
Despite concerns about potential concussion and stitches, Volkanovski is determined to push forward, emphasizing that having a clear direction, which, in his case, is a fight, brings out the best version of himself inside and outside the cage.
Volkanovski had previously ventured into the lightweight division with hopes of capturing a second UFC title. Prior to his bout with Makhachev, he had defended his featherweight title in July against the formidable Yair Rodriguez, securing a victory by TKO at UFC 290. His resilience was further demonstrated as he underwent arm surgery shortly after the fight in August.
Volkanovski's decision to accept the rematch with Makhachev on less than two weeks' notice may not have resulted as he had hoped, but he stands by it, expressing his belief in the importance of challenging oneself in the pursuit of greatness.
"I've been a big advocate for people to challenge themselves and put themselves in this position," Volkanovski explained. "High risk, high reward, I'm a big believer in that. I was chasing greatness."
Volkanovski's fighting spirit and determination shine through as he looks ahead to his January title bout with Ilia Topuria. Despite the recent setback, he remains unwavering in his commitment to return stronger and put on a remarkable performance for his fans and supporters.
